English and Study Skills Tutor
From £35/hour

Hello, I'm Jenny. I qualified as a teacher of English and History in 1994 and have worked in education, both here and abroad, ever since. I now live in the village where I was raised - surrounded by my family - with my 16 year old son who is studying Business Studies.

I love engaging with and encouraging young people in order to help them improve their English and revision skills.

Most recently I have worked in a Learning Support Department and have experience of working with students of all abilities including those with dyslexia, poor working memory, slow processing, lack of engagement etc.

I am familiar with current KS3 and GCSE curricula.

My qualifications include:
BA Hons English and History; Post Graduate Certificate in Education and CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults).

I offer tuition face to face in my home or online.

I am prepared to discuss coming to your home (approximately within a ten mile radius).

My availability is Monday - Saturday. Flexi-time

My hourly rate is £35-£40.

"I struggled with my grammar in English and didn’t have the organisational skills needed for my coursework. With guidance from Jenny, I was able to learn new techniques and understand how to layout essays which was potentially the main reason why my marks grew. I was working at a grade 5 in both English Language and Literature and in my English GCSEs I came out with a 7 in Language and 6 in literature. I believe this is because of Jenny."

"As a classroom teacher of 26 years’ experience in state and independent sectors, I can safely say that Jenny is one of the best support and class teacher practitioners I have worked with. Jenny has high academic standards, borne from years of reading and teaching in different national and international contexts. Her classroom delivery, be it in a support or leading role, is a mix of relaxed, affable charm and insistence on progress that can beguile the most reluctant student. I have seen texts like Of Mice and Men, Macbeth and Nineteenth Century stories unlocked for even the most intellectually challenged student. She has excellent practical ideas for making concepts accessible to students. She has taught me more ideas to improve my own classroom practise than almost any other teacher I can think of, making use of a range of colour, images, group jigsaw tasks and discussion tasks to encourage students to make connections about texts. This also applies to her skill in getting students to write about texts, which is no doubt the average English teacher’s greatest worry. She applies simple, logical and methodical systems to guide students in their planning and writing, yet allowing them to retain their own voice in their work. In short, Jennifer is an excellent, creative practitioner whose manner makes her ideal for a personal tutoring role. I recommend her to you highly.’
